From Slums to Success

Friday, January 30th, 2009

I am Adora Mota Mendoza, a child from the slums (one of the rural areas in Cavite City) where people built houses home owners insurance quotes stilts by the sea, a former sponsored child of World Vision International.

I am the youngest child, the only daughter of Mr. Apolinar I. Mota and the late Mrs. Felicisima R. Mota. I got 2 elder brothers, Polly and Benny, who are 8 and 7 years elder than me, respectively. My father was a fisherman and my mom was a plain housewife. We didn’t have much in the way of food and other basic necessities. My brothers and I even experienced sharing breakdown cover egg among ourselves while my parents are just watching us, waiting if we will have some leftovers. We did not have electricity at home, I was using candles and/or gas lamp when studying at night. During my first grade in school, I had only one skirt which my mother washed everyday. On my second grade, I was able to acquire another skirt and survived the rest of elementary with those 2 skirts. You would wonder, yes, those two skirts became mini-skirts as I grow till I graduate as Valedictorian in elementary. We do not have electricity at home so I was using candle light to study at night. I even experienced selling snacks from one house to another during school vacation just to be able to buy new school supplies. I wont forget when an insane person and a dog ran after me while I was selling snacks in separate instances. I was just relieved from the pain of reusing old notebooks when I became a sponsored child of World Vision International, that was vacation of 1985, before I go to the sixth grade, I was given free school supplies then. I will never forget when I was invited in the church where I stayed until now to attend Sunday School, where I accepted Christ as my Lord and personal Saviour, that was May 9, 1985.

My high school life was not that tough anymore because I experienced online car insurance new uniforms and new school supplies every year. I was also provided with my first pair of eyeglasses with a grade of 250 when I was first year High School. It was only Iowa Lemon Laws that I realized that the world is bright and that you can see even far objects in details. I wasn’t aware of that when I was in grade school because I haven’t experience using eyeglasses. I just thought that it was just normal having a blurred vision. I was able to move the same way as other students who can afford to get the normal basic necessities. We were able to have electricity supply at home when I was in third Year High school. With God’s blessings, I also graduated with honors in High School, fourth honorable mention. I thought I might not be able to continue my studies then because my father did not allow me to study in the far UP Los Banos, which is the only school where I took entrance examination for college. I never intended to have a second option. World Vision International, through the courtesy of Children’s Helper Project gave me the chance to take One Year Integrated Programming Course at Philippine Women’s University where I graduated as the top student. I took up Computer Engineering Technology at Technological University of the Philippines after that course. Driven by circumstances, I got married at an early age, 18. I was pregnant that I can no longer travel from house to school. Still with God’s help, I was able to use the knowledge I gained in the One-Year Programming Course I took. I was hired as a computer instructor at Computer Technological Center in Noveleta, Cavite. It is also where I decided to continue my studies, my students are my classmates too. Thank God, I was able to finish electronics computer technology. With God’s help also, I was given the chance to become junior programmer, then programmer, then systems analyst, later on, senior systems analyst, and now a systems specialist functioning as a project manager at Astec International Ltd.

In my present job, I was able to travel to different places like China, Hongkong and the United States, went to Disneyland which is one of my childhood dreams, a dream come true. Now, though I am not that ‘financially stable’, God provides for my family and all our needs, I have a house of my own, a car loan from our company.

I still have other great plans in my life, one of which is to start a foundation someday, because I am a product of God’s people who shared His blessings to others. With God’s help, had started to send two high school students in Cavite National High School as scholars of a just started mini-foundation.

What you can see now as a woman of faith standing in front of you was once a child of slums, one you would never forsee to have this kind of blessed life I’m having right now. God used World Vision International to change my life. And you, each of you can help make a change. Change the life of a child from the slums into strong, courageous and successful men and women, upholding each others rights, loving and helping one another.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Alternative Energy

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

It is essential that we find affordable and workable sources of alternative sql server restore before the world completely consumes the already limited stock of fossil fuels. Many countries have started to introduce renewable energy schemes and more still have invested money into researching and even producing different sources of alternative energy. While it is essential that we become less reliant or not reliant at all on fossil fuels, many forms of alternative energy have their disadvantages as well as their obvious advantages. It has to be said though, that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages in many cases.

Wind Energy.

Harnessing the power of the wind and using it to our ends is hardly a new idea. Windmills have been and still are used for many different purposes and have been for a great many years, but the improvement of turbines combined with the improved technology to turn the motion of turbine blades into an energy source has seen the use of turbines explode.

Wind power is very popular, but in order to provide a reasonable amount of power it may prove necessary to have large amounts of turbines. On windy days, and even not so windy days some turbines make a noise that many residents consider to be unbearable. Areas of open countryside are protected by conservation orders, which means they can’t be built there either and if there is no conservation order there are still protestors willing to do almost anything to stop the turbines being built. The only viable option left is to use offshore wind farms and these are being investigated, developed and planned all around the world but it takes too many turbines to create a reasonable amount of power and eventually they will have to be built inland; a matter that will be contested wherever the wind farms are proposed to be built.

Solar Energy.

Solar energy is probably the most common form of alternative powers for everyday people and you can see solar lights ad other solar accessories in many gardens. Governments are beginning to offer grants to assist in paying for photovoltaic roof tiles; these Meridia are easily fitted onto your roof and collect the heat from the sun. This heat can either be used to heat water or can even be converted into electricity. The advantage for the consumer is that by including a grid tie system you can actually sell unused electricity back to the grid. Photovoltaic tiles take the place of ordinary roof tiles and can be perfectly blended to fit the look of the outside of your house. With solar energy you too can help the environment.

Biomass.

Ask most people which renewable energy source is the most widely used and they would say either wind or solar, but they’d be wrong or at least they certainly would in America. Since 2000 Biomass has been the most highly produced alternative energy in the United States. Using plant and animal material to create energy isn’t without its downfalls. It would almost certainly meet with competition from residents if biomass power stations were to be created in built up areas. The decomposing plants and animal waste creates an awful smell that is incredibly difficult to mask but it is very renewable (there’s always plants and animal waste).

Other renewable energy sources.

These are the main three renewable energy sources that the countries of the world are creating at the moment but there are others. Whether nuclear power is a viable alternative or not is a debate that will undoubtedly rage on forever, but it is a renewable energy and some countries already have extensive capabilities to structured settlement companies it. Modern technology means that nuclear power stations are safer than they’ve ever been and damage to people, animals or plantation is highly unlikely. However, it takes a long time to develop nuclear power station and even plants that are already being built may take ten years to come to fruition.

Hydropower is used in some countries and uses the motion of waves to create energy. While it is a possibility, the amount of energy produced is minimal and the outlay to set these schemes up is quite large. Without further investigation and improvement in the techniques used it is unlikely that Hydropower will become a major player in the renewable energy world.

The Power of Belief

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Ready? O.K. Here we go…W Clement Stone said, “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe he will achieve.”

On May 25th 1961 J F Kennedy set car insurance quotes on line a major plan for the United States scientists when he declared to a joint session of congress, ‘First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.’

Up until he said that walking on the moon was the stuff of science fiction with the emphasis on ‘FICTION’.

It was in 1953 that Sir Edmund Hilary and Sherpa Tensing stood at the top of the highest mountain in the world, when all said the climb was impossible because of the lack of oxygen.

In May 1964 a young medical student, Dr Roger Bannister, won world renown, not for his skills in the operating theatre, but by doing something in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds that no man had done before.

What did he do, he finally ran a mile in under 4 minutes! The stuff of comics and story books before he ran on a little race track in Oxford, against his old university aided by two colleagues in Chris Brasher and Chris Chataway. Even though eminent physicians had tried to prove that the human body could not withstand the demand placed on it by attempting such a feat.

Why are these events so important when you are setting goals, the individuals had an undying belief in what they wanted to achieve in spite of the number of knowledgeable advisors that surrounded them saying what they proposed could not be done.

Extra-ordinary human beings? No! Just ordinary people doing extra-ordinary things driven by the belief that it could be done.

It’s no doubt the number one secret of World-Class Goal Achievers. When all other things are equal, it’s the reason why one person makes millions and the other one can barely make a living. It’s the antidepressants of belief.

Look at you own situation, when was the last time you set out to achieve something only to be told by your family and peer group that you would never do it. How many times have you heard the little negative voice which is inside all of us tell you that you cannot do what you wanted to set out to do?

We all have conversations with our selves, whenever we are faced with a choice. This conversation takes place between our positive and negative selves. The positive will point out all the advantages to be gained from taking a particular course of action, whereas the negative voice will look at the experiences we have had to date and point out all the times we have failed to achieve a result. The experiences may or may not directly Appleton mortgage refinance to the course of action we are considering.

Napoleon Hill said that faith was the most powerful force on earth (faith is belief without proof). Christians’ know that the power of faith has been described as being so powerful that a tiny amount (the size of a mustard seed) could move mountains.

Belief is nothing more than what we accept as true or real. Now here’s something important to understand: what we accept as true may not be true and it may not be real. But if we accept it as true or real it influences our decisions just as if it were.

Hey, slow down a bit that is a bit heavy. What I am saying here is that we have two minds, you will have heard of this before. The conscious mind and the sub-conscious mind. The conscious mind draws on everything that happens to our five senses, touch, hearing, sight, smell, taste whereas the subconscious has none of these experiences to draw on. Yet it is the subconscious mind that is the true driving force of our existence. When was the last time you had to force yourself to breathe, blink or whatever? Your subconscious mind takes over and we do things automatically.

By the same token it is also the home of your limiting beliefs - remember those conversations?

But we will look at limiting beliefs and how to conquer them elsewhere.

When I was at school it was drilled into us that THE ONLY WAY to succeed was to work hard, pass your exams to get a good job.

This is just not strictly true. Let’s look at some evidence, ever heard of say Bill Gates, the richest person in the world. Bill Gates dropped out of college without a degree. So that belief is obviously false.

Before you say, ‘It was alright for him he developed Microsoft and was in the right place at the right time’. Did he know that when he set off to develop Microsoft?

Who is to say that the dream you have inside your head right at this moment will not cause people in the future, if you follow your dream through, to say of you, ‘It’s alright for him he developed x company’.

Listen, Dr. Maxwell Maltz, the legendary author of Psycho-Cybernetics said, “Within you right mesotheleoma is the power to do things you never dreamed possible. This power becomes available to you just as soon as you can change your beliefs.”

Belief is one of the most powerful traits in your personality. Martin Luther King Jr stated it in the words, “You do not need to see the whole staircase just the inthefootstepsofgiantsfirst steps, go forward in belief.” You will amaze yourself in what you can achieve when you have aburning desire and belief that you will succeed, take your inthefootstepsofgiantsfirst step today.

Why You Should Learn JavaScript

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Since the beginning of the web, there have been focus on different techniques for building websites. In the beginning, a lot of the focus was on the browsers asp web hosting what you could conference call providers with the different versions of HTML supported in those browsers. As the browsers got better and better they also supported JavaScript for adding interaction to the web pages through a scripting interface. We saw a lot of web pages with a lot of JavaScript in the end of 90’s and the beginning of the millennium, but there were no standards, and of course it was a mess to maintain websites that had a lot of JavaScript in them.

The IT bubble burst and JavaScript was thrown out, and focus was more on implementing everything server side. People working with front-end related activities focused their efforts on CSS, as browsers started to live up to standards where it was possible to separate content and look-and-feel with XHTML and CSS. For almost 3 years focus was on separating content from design, and front-end from back-end, but soon, around 2005, people felt that the interactivity on the web had declined and with browser supporting standards, maybe we could start looking at JavaScript again with different goggles. We saw the birth of AJAX and JavaScript libraries such as Prototype, jQuery, MooTools, Dojo and likes. From now on a lot of the people focusing on front-end development started looking into the possibilities that opened up utilizing JavaScript in their websites and online web software.

Today we see that a lot of web services open up external api:s letting developers request data from other websites, integrating them into their websites, creating so called mash ups. Google, Yahoo and other large companies open up their JavaScript libraries and api:s enabling developers to create even more complex web solutions. In the next couple of years JavaScript will also grow stronger on the server side with solutions such as Aptana Jaxer, Rhino and SpiderMonkey. Developers working with web sites and solutions that are built as web solutions better start learning JavaScript.

Mattias Hising runs the blog FrontEndBook, FrontEndBook offers in-depth articles on JavaScript, learning their subscribers techniques such as frontendbookform-validation-with-javascript/JavaScript form validation and everything about jQuery.
